FOND is an absolutely gorgeous gift and home shop in Lymm, full to the brim of wonderfully colourful and unique gifts. I cannot recommend it enough and i urge you to pop in.
the owner laura wanted to me to create a mural illustration and design for the shop window, for the start of spring and also laura was turning 40.
the initial idea she had was to have illustrations of people being colourful and fabulous (just like the FOND shop), a rage against the beige, showing how colourful gifting can bring joy!
she chose a cyclical design showing the characters floating around the bold typographic slogan, 'Hello Joy!'. Interspersed around them are celebratory patterns and shapes and a selection of the best-selling products from the shop.
when coming up with the concepts, i gave laura three routes to choose from - each with a slightly different approach to joy. with each idea, i gave my rationale, themes and alternative lines for the slogan. i include some image references so she could get an idea of the composition and character design. additionally, i provided a rough draft sketch and mock-up to help with visualisation.
you can see the some of the slides from the playback deck, below.
once laura had chosen her route and we had a couple rounds of amends to refine the design and then, it was time for the fun stuff. PAINTING!
the videos below shows the process from start to finish of how i created the final painting including, the ideation, research, sketches, painting tests to the installation. i felt it was important to share just how much thought, time, love and care goes into creating this kind of work.
laura also used the illustrations as an identity for a spring/summer long camping and flash sales that she was doing in the shop. one flash sale included asking customers to bring in colourful clothing that they no longer wear. just another way the artwork was used to spread the love and happiness in a sustainable way.
in retrospect. it was a rather ambitious design but i’m super pleased with how it turned out and, the colours really pop when the sun comes out.
window painting seems to be having a moment, and i’m so happy it is. it’s a great way to draw attention to your business, start conversations with your community and create something that’s super unique and specific to your brand. plus, it’s a big ole middle finger to AI, haha!
have you got a window that you’d be interested in getting painted? if it’s a yes, don't hesitate to bob me an email and we can have a chat over a cuppa and a biscuit.
